San Rafael’s Hidden Gems
Think you know where to eat in Marin? Think again.
San Rafael isn’t the first place you think of when great food comes to mind, however, there are so many hidden gems waiting to be uncovered. Unfortunately, many restaurants don’t get the hype they deserve because they are overshadowed by the same predictable ‘staples’. In addition to shedding some light on these hidden gems, I want to urge you to make an effort to try these mouthwateringly flavorful establishments next time you feel ready for some out-of-the-ordinary food combos.
1. Julie’s Hummus Bar and Grill
Tucked away in the same strip as Mr. Pickles, Julie’s Hummus Bar and Grill is easy to overlook. To enter this establishment, looking past the quick and easy sandwiches or enticing and overly sweet Cold Stone ice cream is imperative. But step inside, and you are hit with a rush of A.C., and then the alluring scent of roasting lambs, chickens, and beef roasting in Mediterranean spices permeates through the entire restaurant.
The menu features Mediterranean staples like shawarma platters loaded with your choice of flavorful lamb, chicken, or beef accompanied by rice and a tangy and refreshing Shirazi salad. If you're in the mood for something lighter, a shawarma or falafel salad full of dense and crispy falafel. While the menu is relatively simple and might seem limited, each dish is made to perfection and full of traditional Mediterranean flavors done right.
2. Puentez Taqueria
Mexican flavors are easy to obtain, however authentic ones require some digging. Look no further than Montecito strip mall to get exactly that. This family-owned spot flies low under the radar, and as is located in the small circle of cafes and restaurants within Montecito.
When walking in you are greeted by friendly smiles and a lively, inviting atmosphere. The multiple seating options from inside seating to outside seating offer a perfect mix of a bustling atmosphere or a calm and warm San Rafael weather meal, depending on your mood.
There are a wide variety of options that are made to order and right in front of you. From three different types of burritos (with carne asada, chicken, or pork) to fresh tamales to tacos to enchiladas, every key Mexican meal is covered. With every mouthful of these delicious options, you can taste, along with typical Mexican flavors, the love and tradition put into each bite. My favorite item to order is the Super Deluxe Burrito with the addition of extra Puentez original spicy salsa.
The San Rafael food scene has much to offer. Taking the extra time to get out of the rut that is eating the same foods over and over again will produce wonders for your taste buds. And luckily, I’ve given you guys a couple of great places to start.
