Finding Persia in SF
Embark on a journey to Persia, except you only have to go to North Beach.
Since 1983 Maykadeh has become a staple of Persian cuisine. Aside from being a taste of Persia within the city, The white-tablecloth restaurant in the heart of the North Beach neighborhood boasts some of the most authentic, interesting, and down-right good food. Known for a wide variety of halal meat options and fresh, vibrant appetizers, it’s a true taste of Persia right in the neighborhood.
My family has been dining at Maykadeh and since the pandemic, ordering from Maykadeh so much that when we get an extra tub of their fragrant saffron rice each time! Safe to say, I’m practically a pro at ordering from Maykadeh, so here’s a list of my all-time favorite dishes.
Shirazi Salad:
While this dish is a typical and ‘standard’ food on many Persian and Middle Eastern menus. To cut through the meaty and heavier dishes, this bright, tangy bite of the salad perfectly complements the rich flavors of the entrees.
Spicy Joojeh Kebab:
While the typical chicken kebab that Maykadeh serves fulfills your tastebuds with a perfect mix of saffron, onion, and lime, the spicy version only works to elevate the kebab. I know the idea of a surprise spice level can be intimidating, but trust me, it elevates the dish. The spice doesn’t overpower but rather enhances the flavors in a way that feels perfectly balanced.
Khoresht Ghaymeh:
Finally, my all-time favorite dish: Ghaymeh. This rich lamb stew with lentils is comfort food at its finest. Let me start by saying that I could eat this dish for breakfast lunch and dinner. Ghaymeh is a thick and hearty lamb stew with lentils. It’s obvious how much care is put into the cooking process with the depth of flavor that shines within the dish and with the small crispy potato chip/fries served on the side the dish is complete!
